Según indicó el portavoz de Estado, John Kirby, Kerry reiteró el compromiso de Estados Unidos con la seguridad de ambos países y «enfatizó la necesidad de una respuesta internacional unificada a las acciones provocativas» de Corea del Norte.

Kerry también subrayó la importancia de la cooperación trilateral entre Seúl, Tokio y Washington ante el desarrollo nuclear norcoreano, que viola resoluciones del Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas.
Corea del Norte anunció el miércoles que había probado con éxito una bomba de hidrógeno, un tipo de ojiva nuclear que permite una detonación en dos fases más potente y en menos espacio que una cabeza nuclear normal.
Pese a que detectores sísmicos de todo el mundo registraron un temblor consistente con una prueba nuclear subterránea en Corea del Norte, Washington duda que Pyongyang haya conseguido desarrollar con éxito una bomba de hidrógeno.
La ONU aseguró que el evento sísmico que tuvo lugar es consistente con una prueba nuclear de la misma intensidad que la realizada en 2013.
Este jueves Corea del Sur anunció la reanudación de sus mensajes de propaganda contra el el régimen de Pyongyang, de acuerdo con lo adelantado por la oficina de la presidenta en Seúl.
Seúl detuvo sus emisiones propagandísticas anteriores a finales de agosto tras acordar con Pyongyang un paquete de medidas destinadas a rebajar las hostilidades entre los dos vecinos, cuando se consideraban varias medidas sancionadoras.

Ya había realizado tres ensayos nucleares, en 2006, 2009 y 2013, probablemente con bombas de plutonio de bajo rendimiento en los dos primeros y de uranio en el tercero, en este caso quizá con un artefacto miniaturizado.
