El convaleciente senador republicano John McCain regresó este martes al Senado para ayudar a su partido a abrir el debate sobre la derogación de la ley de salud conocida como Obamacare, once días después de haber sido sometido a una operación en la que le detectaron un agresivo cáncer cerebral.
McCain fue recibido con un intenso aplauso cuando se presentó a dar su voto y lograr el empate que tuvo que resolver con su voto el vicepresidente Mike Pence, con lo que la derogación de Obamacare pasará a ser debatida en el pleno.
No es seguro si la iniciativa republicana, que dejaría hasta a 32 millones de personas sin seguro médico en los próximos años según estimaciones oficiales, convencerá a los siete republicanos que han expresado su rechazo al proyecto. (Ente ellos el propio McCain, quien dijo que aunque votó para abrir el debate no votará por la ley como está concebida actualmente)
Salvo por la cicatriz sobre su ojo izquierdo, el senador por Arizona lució energético y dio un discurso en el que fustigó la estrategia de su partido para derogar Obamacare y pidió a los senadores regresar a los tiempos de negociaciones bipartidistas para lograr consensos que satisfagan a todos.
