María Leticia ha estado lidiando con el temor de que sus familiares no escaparon de los gases calientes, rocas y cenizas que mataron a docenas de personas mientras la mezcla mortal corría por el volcán de Fuego de Guatemala.

“Mis dos nietos”, lloró el lunes, buscándolos a ellos y a su hija un día después de la erupción que según los informes dejó al menos 70 muertos. “No dejaron pasar a nadie … No vimos a nadie que pudiera ayudarnos. ¡Dios mío, hija mía!”.

 Según le confirmó el Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Forenses de Guatemala (INACIF) a CNN en Español, de los 72 cadáveres 19 han sido identificados. La Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres (Conred) dice que la cifra es de 70 personas fallecidas.

La Conred ordenó que se evacuara el área llamada zona segura, cerca del volcán, debido a que sigue aumentando la actividad volcánica.

Estas son las cifras de la emergencia:

  • 3.271 personas atendidas
  • 46 personas heridas
  • 3.271 personas evacuadas
  • 2.625 personas albergadas
  • 70 personas fallecidas
  • 192 desaparecidas

CONRED INFORMA. Material volcánico desciende hacia el Sur del volcán de Fuego. Acciones de respuesta continuan en el lugar.

Las ciudades fueron engullidas por cenizas gruesas y pesadas por la repentina erupción del domingo, bloqueando carreteras y dejando atrás escombros humeantes que entorpecieron el paso de los rescatistas.

Los residentes aturdidos han estado realizando funerales por los muertos, incluso cuando los trabajadores se preparan para la probabilidad de encontrar más cuerpos cuando alcanzan las laderas invadidas por el flujo volcánico.

En Alotenango, un pueblo a unas pocas millas al este del volcán, los trabajadores de recuperación y las familias se abrazaron el lunes bajo una tienda de campaña frente a unos ataúdes con restos de víctimas, muestra un video de Reuters.

Una mujer sollozante que vive en la ciudad de Los Lotes dijo a CNN en Español: “La casa de mi madre fue sepultada con toda mi familia adentro … mis tres hijos, dos hijas y mi nieto. Mi madre, mis hermanas, mis sobrinas y sobrinos”.

Los bomberos y otros trabajadores de recuperación continuaron sus búsquedas, y había al menos un atisbo de esperanza en las cenizas en un video publicado el lunes por la Policía Nacional Civil de Guatemala. Mostraba a un policía rescatando a una niña de un hogar cubierto de cenizas volcánicas. La bebé parecía estar seguro y sano.

Los rescatistas han tenido dificultades para respirar en las condiciones peligrosas. Y el calor del suelo ha sido tan intenso que las suelas de las botas de algunos bomberos se estaban arrancando y tenían que caminar sobre tablones de madera.

“Es muy, muy difícil debido al hecho de que es muy, muy caliente”, dijo el lunes el bombero voluntario Mario Cifuentes. “El suelo es muy inestable. No podemos estar caminando … Los zapatos, han sido completamente destruidos por el calor”.
