Corea del Norte desarrolló una ojiva miniatura capaz de albergar carga nuclear dentro de sus misiles balísticos, con lo que rompió sus propias barreras en el camino para convertirse en una potencia nuclear, reporta el diario The Washington Post al citar las conclusiones de un informe confidencial de la Agencia de Defensa e Inteligencia.
El análisis fue completado el 28 de julio y, según el Post, se conoció a la par de otra evaluación de inteligencia que demostró el aumento del número de bombas en el arsenal nuclear de Corea del Norte. Según cálculos de Estados Unidos, hasta 60 armas nucleares están bajo el control del líder norcoreano Kim Jong Un, aunque expertos independientes consideran que podrían ser menos.
El presidente Donald Trump reaccionó al conocer la noticia, asegurando que si Corea del Norte escala en su amenaza nuclear «encontrará un fuego y una furia que el mundo nunca ha visto».
El hallazgo aumenta las preocupaciones por la amenaza que representa Corea del Norte para Estados Unidos y por las estimaciones de crecimiento de su arsenal a un ritmo mucho más acelerado del que se pensaba podían alcanzar. El desarrollo de esta miniaturización ya había sido confirmado por el ministro de Defensa de Japón. Incluso hace un año Pyongyang había informado sobre la prueba realizada con un dispositivo diseñado para entrar en un misil, algo que fue visto con escepticismo por distintos expertos independientes.
«La IC (comunidad de inteligencia) estima que Corea del Norte ha producido armas nucleares (…) para incluir el envío de misiles tipo balísticos intercontinentales ICBM», se lee en la evaluación, según el diario, que asegura que las conclusiones fueron confirmadas por dos funcionarios estadounidenses relacionados con el documento. Aún se desconoce si Kim Jong Un ha probado este diseño.
A finales de julio, el régimen de Pyongyang lanzó su segundo misil balístico intercontinental en un mes. Este último voló 45 minutos y llegó a una altura de 2,300 millas antes de caer en aguas cercanas a la isla japonesa de Hokkaido.
Los cálculos de expertos, realizados por el Proyecto de Defensa de Misiles del Centro de Estudios Estratégicos e Internacionales, con sede en Washington, indican que ese modelo de misil tenía la capacidad de viajar casi 5,000 millas, es decir, que podría dar en un blanco tan lejos como Hawaii o Alaska.
Esa nueva prueba ocurrió en un contexto de creciente preocupación de los organismos de inteligencia, tanto en EEUU como en Asia, de que el gobierno de Kim Jong Un pudiera desarrollar su arsenal de misiles y alcanzar territorio continental estadounidense para el próximo año, específicamente ciudades de su Costa Oeste.
Y a menos de una semana de aquel lanzamiento, Estados Unidos probó con éxito el misil intercontinental Minuteman III –sin carga explosiva– desde la Base de la Fuerza Aérea Vandenberg, en California. Esa fue entonces la cuarta prueba de este año.
El sábado, tanto China como Rusia se unieron a otros miembros del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU para aprobar nuevas sanciones económicas contra Corea del Norte.
El presidente Trump ha asegurado anteriormente que a Pyongyang nunca debería permitírsele amenazar al país con armas nucleares. En una entrevista el sábado en MSNBC, el consejero de seguridad nacional H.R. McMaster dijo que el país insistirá en que Corea del Norte de desnuclearice.
