Gracias a la ley firmada en octubre de este año por el gobernador Jerry Brown, todos los menores de 19 años residentes de California recibirán cuidados de salud a partir de mediados de 2016 sin importar su estatus migratorio.
Si los ingresos de su hogar son hasta un 266% por encima del nivel de pobreza, sus niños son elegibles para el programa Medi-Cal, como se le conoce a Medicaid en el estado.
Pero para que puedan recibir la cobertura completa (full-scope) es importante que antes -mientras más pronto, mejor- se inscriban en el Medi-cal restringido, también conocido como Medi-cal de emergencia, aunque solo provea servicios básicos de salud.
¿La razón?
Una cláusula de la nueva ley afirma que los niños que estén inscritos en Medi-Cal restringido accederán a la versión completa del programa apenas entre en vigencia (en algún momento después del 1 de mayo de 2016), sin necesidad de tramitar una nueva solicitud.
“Y no solo deben hacerlo para beneficiarse de la expansión: registrarse cuanto antes también ayudará a los pacientes en casos de emergencia”, resaltó a Univision Noticias Bill Phelps, director de programas de servicios de la Clínica Sierra Vista.
Estimaciones indican que en California residen unos 260,000 niños indocumentados que podrían beneficiarse del programa y acceder a cuidados preventivos de salud, como chequeos anuales y otro tipo de revisiones.
Una madre residente de California llena la solicitud de Medi-Cal con la ayuda de una navegadora de salud.
